What Is A Prophet
First of all what is a Prophet? Webster defines a Prophet as “a person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God”. A Prophet has also been defined as a Seer. Webster defines a Seer as “someone who predicts things that will happen in the future”. The Bible in Deuteronomy 18:18-19 KJV says “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him”. The scriptures go on to say “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord , if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him”. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 KJV.
So a prophet is someone who is inspired of God to speak events that will come to pass shortly or will happen weeks, months or years into the future but it will happen. A lot of times a Prophet will speak things under inspiration that they don’t know what they’re saying because it’s not them speaking but God using their voice to speak. God said I will put my words in his mouth. It is not unusual for God to say things in a way that seems strange to us but it’s only because of the way we have been taught and what we think the way things should be. The scriptures say in Proverbs 3:5 KJV “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” and also in Romans 12:2 KJV it says “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.
A lot has to do with us being willing to let go of our thoughts and ideas and consider another way of looking at the word of God. No matter what, the words the Prophet speaks has to line up with the scriptures and as it says if what this Prophet says does not come to pass then don’t fear him. God so designed his word and His Message to the people that it has to be approached by faith. There are people that are still around that was at some of William Branham’s meetings and witnessed the miracles and great things that God did through his servant. The majority of the accounts that took place over 50 years ago are on the messages that were left here for us. And we make our choice whether we want to accept or reject it. Just as it was in the days of Jesus, where he discerned the hearts and performed miracles and healed the sick, yet it was His Message that was the important thing. God did all these great things to get the people’s attention so they would know that he was with that person. Jesus said in John 10:37-38 KJV “If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him”. The same thing applies to William Branham or any other man who is a true servant of God.
When God sends a messenger or Prophet, there will be miracles and prophecies and great things taking place that we can look back in the scriptures and see those same things taking place with other Prophets and even with Jesus so that we can know that God is with that man. The scriptures will also tell of the coming of the Prophet because Prophets in the past spoke prophecies to take place in the future. If a person is spiritual they will see where that Messengers life actually patterns after other Messengers and Prophets in the Bible. Now there were Prophets who did not perform miracles and supernatural things such as John the Baptist but the key is they stayed right with the Word and as the scripture says by their fruits you shall know them. Their lives would bear the fruits of the spirit. Jesus said in Matthew 7:15-17 KJV “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit”. The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:22-23 KJV “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law”. Of course not everyone well believe that man or accept His Message and will find fault with it but it happened to all the Prophets and it happens today because the Word said it will be that way.
In conclusion, what is a Prophet? It is a man who is inspired and lead of the Spirit of God to speak the Word of God for a certain time, generation, age or dispensation. Most likely this person will prophecy, perform miracles, heal the sick and supernatural things will take place to get the people’s attention so that they know that God is with that man but the purpose for that Prophet is to bring a message of deliverance to the people of that day. To accept his message is life to reject his message is death.
